How a small lifestyle change made a huge difference

What is a lifestyle?

Wiki says – “Lifestyle is the interests, opinions, behaviors, and behavioral orientations of an individual, group, or culture.”

I say – “It’s the kind of life you live, aspire to live, and can change with time.”

Through this post, I want to share how a minute change in my lifestyle made a huge difference; and a good one! Let me begin by saying that I am a person who strives each day to incorporate something new or challenging in my life. It just gives me push and a purpose to keep going. It’s like when I feel low, I look forward to trying new things. This helps me distract my mind and also keep me busy. GIVE IT A TRY. It’s worth it.

So, people who have known me for a long now can vouch for it as to how much I am into sports and athletics. Till my high school, I represented my school and state as a team Captain in Volleyball. It was and is still my passion. I even considered taking it up professionally but things change. I was a super enthusiastic student who always looked forward to sports days (I spent half of my life in a boarding school) and we take these events too seriously :D. There was not a single sport that I didn’t try my hands on (sprint, relay, long distance, long jump blah blah……). I failed a lot but succeeded too. Above all, I built a positive sportsman spirit and fitness came into my life by default. All the credit goes to my amazing parents, who pushed me and my sister at a very young age to get into sports. For instance, I was made to join swimming and gymnastics class at the age of 3. For most of my hostel life, I was actively involved in Yoga, participated and won a lot of Yoga competitions.

But as adulthood hit and high school was over, I left these good things behind. I continued playing Volleyball in my college but not with that zeal. New things came up such as CHILLING, PARTYING……(you all know what I mean). One lead into other and being part of the Corporate world eventually, all the athletic lifestyle vanished.

Ok, let me take a pause and say, being athletic is not the only way to lead a healthy lifestyle but it was for me. Sports taught me to be patient, calm, disciplined, grounded, resilient, considerate and HUMAN. I used to slough for hours in the court and still had a sound peaceful sleep at night. But the hectic and lazy life took over and I was reluctant to do anything else except for my 9-5 job. This ultimately took a toll on my mental and physical health. It started with bad skin, cystic acne leading into the onset of PCOS, anxiety issues, etc. I just couldn’t sit on it, get more worried and do nothing. So, the first thing I did was see a doctor for my physical health. Then I started figuring out what made me anxious and why did it start NOW and not before. All this self-analysis led me to believe that it was due to the lack of any physical activity in my life. The easiest thing I could do was start with the basics, like join a gym.

My skin at the worst with cystic acne

And that’s when Gym happened to me. I used to set everyday goals for myself, made sure to at least go 5 times a week and take it easy- one step at a time. And in a short period, I was hooked on to it. Earlier I used to have a FOMO* for Saturday parties but things changed and I started to feel the same way for my Leg-days (yes, Saturday is my dedicated leg day). This was a big moment of ‘lifestyle change’ and with time I started feeling good from within. My skin got clearer (it’s a long process), had things in control and whenever I felt anxious, I could figure out ways to calm down. Now I cannot go long without exercising. I do take breaks but never stop or plan on stopping. Like others, I too want that perfect bikini body but don’t kill myself for it since my priority is to just be healthy. Now, diet plays a major role in achieving that drool-worthy bod, but I just can’t ‘not eat’. I am food- junkie (almost love every cuisine). I just can’t imagine my life without Chinese food, Sushi and Red-Thai curry 😛 (these really do add a lot of extra weight). Therefore, I try my best to stick by the gym routine. That’s the balancing act.

Saturday- Leg Day 🙂

This is the best chance to also call out on my two amazing instructors who have pushed me each day to do better. Their names are Ravi Kumar and Raja Sharma. It is not a mandate to have a personal trainer but it is very important to have good instructors around you who can guide and motivate you enough to keep going.

I am sharing a few of my workout videos hoping this might help you guys make a little change today for a better tomorrow for yourself.

Learn to make peace with things that are not in your control and take pride in who you are and the choices you make.”
